Cammy's Choice scores record-setting dead-heat win in Laurel's Primonetta

Co-setting a new stakes record in the 22nd running of Laurel's six-furlong Primonetta Stakes, Charles Murray's New York homebred mare, Cammy's Choice, challenged near even-money favorite Access Fee (1.10-to-1) from the turn to the wire while battling to a dead heat victory in 1:09.70. The five-year-old daughter of Take Me Out was the 2.50-to-1 second choice among seven starters in the Laurel-Pimlico circuit's traditional early April sprint event for fillies and mares, in which she was race-ridden for the first time by jockey Julian Pimentel. Winner of Philadelphia Park's six-furlong Cornucopia Stakes in the mud last November in her final 2008 outing, Cammy's Choice is now a multiple stakes winner. She provided another excellent example of how competitive the New York-bred restricted filly and mare sprint division is on the NYRA circuit, where she has placed second or third in five restricted sprint stakes.
Breaking dead last and next to the rail, Cammy's Choice immediately went after Access Fee, who pursued suicidal pacesetter Fancy Diamond through a 21.76 opening quarter-mile before gaining a short lead while coming three-wide out of the turn, setting a half-mile fraction of 44.73. The two top choices actually overtook the front-runner almost simultaneously on either side of that rival, reaching the top of the stretch no more than heads apart -- the New York-bred next to the rail, and the favorite near the middle of the track. Cammy's Choice set the mid-stretch five-furlong fraction of 56.83, but at the wire the two were again dead-even -- as they appeared to have been throughout most of the stretch drive. There was a daylight margin back to the third-place finisher, 3.40-to-1 third choice All Giving, in a formful contest that had previous stakes winners finishing first through fifth.
The jockey on Cammy's Choice, Pimentel, thought his mount had gotten the nod: "I thought I won it," asserted Pimentel. "I saw the opening (on the rail) and went for it. I saw the horse to beat (Access Fee) outside of me, so I wanted to get the jump on him (Luis Garcia, the jockey aboard Access Fee)."
Owner-breeder Murray of Philadelphia was impressed because Cammy's Choice did not have an easy task in pulling even with Access Fee after Fancy Diamond (who finished fifth) had set such a fast early pace: "It was a great effort because she (Cammy's Choice) didn't make the lead," explained Murray. "They went 21 and change (for the first quarter), so, for her to still be running at the end was impressive."
Victory in the Primonetta increased the earnings of Cammy's Choice to $233,168 and improved her never-unplaced record to 6 - 6 - 2 in 14 starts, which also includes a 1:08.99 six-furlong allowance-winning performance by eight lengths at Philadelphia Park last October. Trained by Edward Lehman since returning to competition last fall off a 10-1/2-month layoff, Cammy's Choice had placed second under co-top weight behind NYTB champion By the Light in January's Soft Morning and a top-weighted third in the March 1 Broadway -- both six-furlong Aqueduct stakes for state-bred fillies and mares. After the Broadway, Lehman had given the bay mare a half-mile "bullet" workout at Philadelphia Park on March 23.
Foaled at Dr. Jonathan Davis's Milfer Farm, Inc., in Unadilla, Cammy's Choice is the first of two runners, both multiple winners, produced from juvenile winner Truth, whom Murray had purchased for $32,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2000 March sale of two-year-olds in training. She is named for Dr. Cammy Wilson of Richboro, Pennsylvania, who had a private veterinarian practice but also had been state vet at Liberty Bell (harness) and Philadelphia Park and holds a high regard for Alydar mares -- one of which was the three-time winning dam of Truth. Dr. Wilson had given a special stamp of approval to Cammy's Choice after Truth had delivered that filly -- prompting the new arrival to be named Cammy's Choice. Truth has been retired from breeding because of a uterine problem and currently resides in Bucks County, Pennsylvania as a riding horse under the care of Felicia Kelly. Truth is inbred 3 x 3 to Raise a Native and is a half-sister to multiple Keeneland Grade 2 winner Grand Jewel ($285,151) and to two other six-figure-earners, including five-time winner Satsukimusume ($733,550 in Japan).
