GOLDEN MOKA, c. 3, Golden Missile - Sunset Seeker, by Seeking the Gold.
Owner, Good Friends Stable; breeder, Adena Springs (On.)
Lifetime: 4 4-0-0
$301,695.
Former Panamanian sprinter Golden Moka made a sensational debut
in North America on Sunday at Fort Erie, scoring a clear victory in
the $482,600 Prince of Wales
Stakes, the second leg of the
Canadian Triple Crown.
Owned by Good Friends Stable—
a partnership that includes
former jockey Rene Douglas,
who was paralyzed in a spill at
Arlington Park last year—
Golden Moka outbattled runner-
up Mobil Unit in the stretch
and shook clear to win by 2¾
lengths as the 10.35 to-1 fifth wagering choice.
There will be no Canadian Triple Crown winner this year as Big Red
Mike, a wire-to-wire winner earlier this month at Woodbine in the
Queen’s Plate Stakes, the first jewel of the series, finished third as the
0.95-to-1 favorite, a length behind 13.35-to-1 sixth choice Mobil Unit.
The series concludes with the Breeders’ Stakes at 1½ miles on August
15 at Woodbine.
Golden Moka covered 13⁄16 miles in 1:56.45 on a track rated as fast.
By Golden Missile, who now is based in New York after launching
his stallion career at Adena Springs Kentucky, Golden Moka made his
first start beyond six furlongs in the Prince of Wales. He capably carried
his speed over a route of ground, following three wins by a combined
margin of 171⁄2 lengths in Panama last year, to remain unbeaten.
Douglas, a native of Panama who is unlikely to ever walk again following
the racing accident at Arlington in May 2009, recommended
the purchase of the colt after scrutinizing videos of Golden Moka’s
races in Panama. His physician and friend, Hilton Gordon, M.D., and
former Chicago Blackhawks coach Denis Savard also are involved in
the Good Friends Stable ownership group, which spent countless
hours with Douglas as he recovered from his devastating injuries.
Golden Moka subsequently was transferred to trainer Brian Lynch
but became ill after arriving at Woodbine and lost training time. The
Prince of Wales marked his first start off an eight-month layoff, but
he appeared well within himself for the convincing victory under Fort
Erie-based Anthony Stephen.
Making his dirt debut, Big Red Mike grabbed the early advantage,
closely pressed by Mobil Unit and Golden Moka through the opening
quarter-mile. Mobil Unit took control through a half-mile and six
furlongs as Eurico Da Silva took Big Red Mike to third. Golden Moka
tracked Mobil Unit about a length back before engaging that opponent
entering the stretch and surging clear.
Bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, Golden Moka was an $8,000
purchased by previous owner Stud Monserat at the 2008 Keeneland
September yearling sale. He is out of the unraced Seeking the Gold
mare Sunset Seeker from the immediate family of 1991 European Horse of the Year and sire Arazi and Group 1 winner and sire
Noverre

(10/18) NY sire Golden Missile gets 10th SW - 5th of 2008 - in 2yo winner at LaD
Not many stallions have been represented by stakes-winning offspring from their first, second, third, fourth, and fifth crops in one year, but that unique status applies to Grade 1-winning multi-millionaire GOLDEN MISSILE, who stood his first New York season at Dr. Jonathan Davis's Milfer Farm, Inc. in Unadilla in 2008.
On New York Showcase Saturday, October 18, Golden Missile's two-year-old son, Bertsgoldenmissile, romped by 5-1/2 lengths at odds-on (.60-to-1) among eight in Louisiana Downs' seven-furlong Gate Dancer Stakes, becoming his sire's 10th stakes winner and fifth black-type winner of the year. Now with a never-unplaced record of 3 - 2 - 2 in seven starts that includes second-place and third-place efforts in turf stakes at five furlongs and a mile at Louisiana Downs in July and August, Bertsgoldenmissile helped boost Golden Missile's 2008 progeny earnings to more than $2.4-million. The stallion's lifetime offspring earnings from five crops of racing age have reached $10.3-million through three weeks into October.
Three stallions currently stand in the Empire State with 2008 progeny earnings above $2.4-million; in addition to Golden Missile, they are current leading 2008 New York sire FREUD and third-leading 2008 state sire CHIEF SEATTLE.
Bertsgoldenmissile is the third winner produced from New York-bred Storm West, who is an unraced daughter of Gone West. Other current stakes winners sired by Golden Missile are 2008 multiple black-type winners Going Wild ($512,200) and Miss Missile ($332,724), turf stakes winner Klissura, and Midwestern sprinter Ginger Bay.
