Golden Moka, trained by Brian Lynch, puts his 4-for-4 record on the line exactly two months after winning the Prince of Wales Stakes—the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown—off a seven-month layoff. The Ontario-bred son of Golden Missile   began his career with three consecutive wins in Panama before shipping to Fort Erie for the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales.

“He’s a very talented horse. That’s what gave me the confidence to stretch him out that far,” said Lynch. “I’m usually not that ambitious. I don’t like to run a horse like that off a long layoff. As we got into our final tune-up works, I worked him with some allowance caliber horses, and he handled them with ease.”

Golden Moka is owned by a group brought together by former jockey Rene Douglas, who suffered career-ending paralysis in a spill at Arlington Park in May 2009. NHL Hall of Famer Denis Savard is one of several who own a piece of the Canadian-bred colt. The owners call their partnership the “Good Friends Stable.”

“To have Rene involved more than anything is great for me,” said Lynch. “He’s such a great rider and a great friend. It’s really exciting for me to be involved with a horse that has brought him so much joy.”

Golden Moka was purchased at Keeneland as a yearling in September 2008 for $8,000 before starting his career in Panama. Bought privately by Good Friends Stable, he was turned over to Lynch, a Canadian-based trainer who Douglas befriended during their time in California in the 1990s. Golden Moka has earned $301,695.

“I think we’ve given him the right time between races so that he doesn’t bounce,” said Lynch. “He’s trained super up to this race. His work the other day (1:12 3/5 for six furlongs at Woodbine Sept. 18) was very nice. He’s sitting on a big race.”

MORE FROM THE DRF

In just one start, Golden Moka has placed an ownership group led by retired jockey Rene Douglas in an enviable position. The horse more than paid for himself when he handily knocked off a $500,000 stakes in July. And by virtue of that win, he could go favored Saturday in the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Undefeated in three starts in Panama, Golden Moka has been a mystery horse since he arrived in North America. He was 10-1 when he rallied from off the pace to win the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $500,000 Prince of Wales on July 25. The Prince of Wales was Golden Moka’s first race in eight months and his first test at two turns. Now undefeated in four starts, he has left many curious as to the full scope of his talent.

“The Super Derby is the next step to get a gauge on him,” said Brian Lynch, who trains Golden Moka for Good Friends Stable.

Douglas, a native of Panama, was instrumental in scouting out Golden Moka. The horse had won a maiden race, an allowance, and a Group 3 in Panama by a combined margin of 18 lengths between September and November 2009.

“I knew this horse would go long,” Douglas said. “In Panama, they don’t run too many long races because it’s so hot over there. He won his first race very impressively. He just played with the horses. And in the stakes last time, they tried to push him and squeeze him and he never gave up. They put a lot of pressure on him and he still won it, and after the finish line, he saw another horse and he opened up again. I like horses when they do that. They seem to have a big heart.”

According to Douglas, Golden Moka was purchased in April for $50,000. There was an additional $20,000 in shipping costs, he said, as the horse had to travel from South America to Canada. Golden Moka had been owned by the father of his original trainer, Jose Bartoli, and became available after the owner’s death. Bartoli’s father had purchased Golden Moka for $8,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in 2008. Bred in Ontario, the horse is by Golden Missile and from the female family of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Arazi.

“The son just decided to sell,” said Douglas.

Douglas has several partners in Golden Moka, including Denis Savard, a Hall of Fame hockey player. The group was formed in the aftermath of a May 2009 spill at Arlington Park that left Douglas paralyzed from the waist down.

“When I got hurt, these guys meant everything to me,” Douglas said. “They are good friends. When I got hurt, they were with me 24-7. This was like something to give back. They like the sport so much. I was more excited to see them jumping up and down after the horse won than the horse winning the race. They were so good to me.”

The other part of the Golden Moka equation was to find the right trainer for the horse. Douglas turned to another friend, Lynch, whom he had ridden for when the two men were based in Southern California in the mid-1990s.

“Brian is absolutely great at bringing a horse up to win first back from a layoff,” he said. “I always liked the way he trained. I really wanted to go slow with this horse, and that’s the thing with Brian. He’s patient.”

Douglas said the Prince of Wales showcased Lynch’s abilities. The horse had not raced farther than six furlongs heading into the July 25 stakes at Fort Erie. He won by 2 3/4 lengths, and in the process defeated Queen’s Plate winner Big Red Mike.

“From three-quarters to a mile and three-sixteenths is unbelievable,” Douglas said. “It’s hard to find a trainer who can do that. And not for a $500,000 race. Usually, they run in an allowance to get ready for the big race. This one got ready in the big race. You’ve got to give Brian big, big credit. He was the right trainer for this horse.”

Lynch said he liked what he saw from Golden Moka heading into the Prince of Wales.

“He trained like he was more than capable of stepping up,” he said. “He gave us the confidence to take the chance. He’s the ultimate professional, a lovely horse to be around. He puts a lot into his training. He’s a good work horse. And he’s got heart. The reason why he’s 4 for 4 is because he wants to be a good horse. He’s got a lot of heart.”

So does Douglas. He won’t be at the Super Derby, but he is making progress in his rehab efforts back home in Florida. Douglas has had a stem-cell treatment for his injuries in a procedure that was done in Panama.

“It went good,” he said. “I go back in November. I have to do it at least three times. I’m just doing therapy and hoping that God will heal me. I’m doing the best I can. They should make a movie about this horse. He’s helping the healing.”

GOLDEN MOKA, c. 3, Golden Missile - Sunset Seeker, by Seeking the Gold.
Owner, Good Friends Stable; breeder, Adena Springs (On.)
Lifetime: 4 4-0-0 $301,695.

Former Panamanian sprinter Golden Moka made a sensational debut in North America on Sunday at Fort Erie, scoring a clear victory in the $482,600 Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Owned by Good Friends Stable— a partnership that includes former jockey Rene Douglas, who was paralyzed in a spill at Arlington Park last year— Golden Moka outbattled runner- up Mobil Unit in the stretch and shook clear to win by 2¾ lengths as the 10.35 to-1 fifth wagering choice.

There will be no Canadian Triple Crown winner this year as Big Red Mike, a wire-to-wire winner earlier this month at Woodbine in the Queen’s Plate Stakes, the first jewel of the series, finished third as the 0.95-to-1 favorite, a length behind 13.35-to-1 sixth choice Mobil Unit. The series concludes with the Breeders’ Stakes at 1½ miles on August 15 at Woodbine.

Golden Moka covered 13⁄16 miles in 1:56.45 on a track rated as fast. By Golden Missile, who now is based in New York after launching his stallion career at Adena Springs Kentucky, Golden Moka made his first start beyond six furlongs in the Prince of Wales. He capably carried his speed over a route of ground, following three wins by a combined margin of 171⁄2 lengths in Panama last year, to remain unbeaten.

Douglas, a native of Panama who is unlikely to ever walk again following the racing accident at Arlington in May 2009, recommended the purchase of the colt after scrutinizing videos of Golden Moka’s races in Panama. His physician and friend, Hilton Gordon, M.D., and former Chicago Blackhawks coach Denis Savard also are involved in the Good Friends Stable ownership group, which spent countless hours with Douglas as he recovered from his devastating injuries.

Golden Moka subsequently was transferred to trainer Brian Lynch but became ill after arriving at Woodbine and lost training time. The Prince of Wales marked his first start off an eight-month layoff, but he appeared well within himself for the convincing victory under Fort Erie-based Anthony Stephen.

Making his dirt debut, Big Red Mike grabbed the early advantage, closely pressed by Mobil Unit and Golden Moka through the opening quarter-mile. Mobil Unit took control through a half-mile and six furlongs as Eurico Da Silva took Big Red Mike to third. Golden Moka tracked Mobil Unit about a length back before engaging that opponent entering the stretch and surging clear. Bred in Ontario by Adena Springs, Golden Moka was an $8,000 purchased by previous owner Stud Monserat at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale. He is out of the unraced Seeking the Gold mare Sunset Seeker from the immediate family of 1991 European Horse of the Year and sire Arazi and Group 1 winner and sire Noverre

(10/18) NY sire Golden Missile gets 10th SW - 5th of 2008 - in 2yo winner at LaD

Not many stallions have been represented by stakes-winning offspring from their first, second, third, fourth, and fifth crops in one year, but that unique status applies to Grade 1-winning multi-millionaire GOLDEN MISSILE, who stood his first New York season at Dr. Jonathan Davis's Milfer Farm, Inc. in Unadilla in 2008.

On New York Showcase Saturday, October 18, Golden Missile's two-year-old son, Bertsgoldenmissile, romped by 5-1/2 lengths at odds-on (.60-to-1) among eight in Louisiana Downs' seven-furlong Gate Dancer Stakes, becoming his sire's 10th stakes winner and fifth black-type winner of the year. Now with a never-unplaced record of 3 - 2 - 2 in seven starts that includes second-place and third-place efforts in turf stakes at five furlongs and a mile at Louisiana Downs in July and August, Bertsgoldenmissile helped boost Golden Missile's 2008 progeny earnings to more than $2.4-million. The stallion's lifetime offspring earnings from five crops of racing age have reached $10.3-million through three weeks into October.

Three stallions currently stand in the Empire State with 2008 progeny earnings above $2.4-million; in addition to Golden Missile, they are current leading 2008 New York sire FREUD and third-leading 2008 state sire CHIEF SEATTLE.

Bertsgoldenmissile is the third winner produced from New York-bred Storm West, who is an unraced daughter of Gone West. Other current stakes winners sired by Golden Missile are 2008 multiple black-type winners Going Wild ($512,200) and Miss Missile ($332,724), turf stakes winner Klissura, and Midwestern sprinter Ginger Bay.

Golden Missile, a syndicated dirt-and-turf stakes-winning son of A.P. Indy - Santa Catalina, by Cure the Blues, stood the 2008 season for a fee of $7,500, live foal.
